Connolly's 2004 - 2006
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Ernie for Set List & Review] A jam packed Connolly's rang in the new year in style with a well over 2 hour show that started earlier than anticipated at about 10:45, and ended with the last notes to "Gloria/I Fought the Law" at about 1:15 a.m. The 21 song set included "Auld Lang Syne" at the stroke of midnight as we counted it down with the throngs just a block away. As usual, from the Connolly's 3rd floor windows you could witness the streams of confetti flying by, and 2006 was here. Nice to know you could be so close to that Times Square fantasy in the midst of warmth, drink & friends.... Happy New Year's to all; see you at a show soon! Set List: Big Fellah... New York, NY 10009... Green Suede Shoes... Reels... Three Little Birds... Desperate... American Wake... Rockin' the Bronx... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom.... Girl Next Door... SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S (CHRISTMAS PARTY) [Thanks to Ernie for Set List & Review] Special thanks to Christine Timm and her group of stepdancers, billed as the Black 47 dancers, for opening the Christmas party and dancing throughout the show. Great job! Santa hats were sported throughout Connolly?s in this most festive night that brought out some friends we haven?t seen in a while. It was great seeing Phyllis & Kim. The band played a 17 song two hour set, concluding with the blistering "Gloria/I Fought The Law" medley. P2 was Santa2 with a blowup Santa suit that malfunctioned as he brought the lads back out for the encores. One show left, the annual New Year?s Eve Gala. Hope to see you all there as we?ll ring in the New Year in style! SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Heather for Set List & Review] Making my holiday weekend complete was spending some time with the rest of my family. Except, I totally forgot that from Thanksgiving until after New Year's Eve, Times Square is tourist central. I mean, it usually is, but it just seems worse or more obvious during this time. After almost getting run over by a party bike, an entire street corner come to a total stop when firetrucks went down the block and every digital camera went off: you mean to tell me there are no fire engines where you're from! There were a lot of new faces, and Larry beckoned everyone closer to the stage because "Hammy wanted to see the whites of our eyes." Set List: Big Fellah - Black Rose - Banks Of The Hudson - Trouble In The Land - Reels - Fallin' Off The Edge Of America ? Rockin? the Bronx ? Different Drummer ? Those Saints ? Forty Deuce - Baghdad Blues - Jigs - Brooklyn Goodbye ? Czechoslovakia ? Funky Ceili Encores: 40 Shades of Blue - Uncle Jim

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S It?s now beginning to seem like a weekly event, but another special set list was played by the band last night at Connolly?s. This time they included my personal favorite, "Vinegar Hill," as well as Banks of the Hudson, Our Lady of the Bronx, My Love is in New York, as well as a rousing Oh Maureen encore. Connolly's was packed with a really enthusiastic crowd, which included a group of dancers who took over during The Reels and Johnny Byrne's Jig. Black 47 was wonderfully introduced by the hosts of WFUV's show Ceol na nGael, Maura Monahan and Maggie Dolan. No Geoff tonight, but kudos to Fred and Joe who worked overtime to not only play their parts, but also fill in with Geoff' musical parts. Nothing seemed empty. It was an excellent crowd, set list and performance. Set List: New York, NY - San Patricio - Vinegar Hill - Reels - Banks of the Hudson - Our Lady of the Bronx - Rockin' the Bronx - Road to Ruin - Fire of Freedom - My Love is in New York - Downtown Baghdad Blues - Uncle Jim - Jigs - 40 Shades of Blue - Funky Ceili Encores: Oh Maureen - Maria's Wedding

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2005 @ CONNOLLY' (FIRE OF FREEDOM) A completely special evening at Connolly' as Black 47 performed their 1993 masterpiece, Fire of Freedom, to an enthusiastic, packed audience. After warming up with three songs, the band piped in Fordham Road/8 a.m. and immediately kicked into high gear with an energetic Maria's Wedding. From here on, it was one highlight after another and it was clear that hearing the songs in their exact album order added a particular uniqueness to this show. It was particularly interesting to see Funky Ceili done so early in the set, and worthwhile to note that the infrequently played Sleep Tight in NYC, which Larry introduced by its other title, Blind Mary/Her Dear Old Donegal, was very powerful. Thanks to Larry for the shout out to all my C.S.E. friends who were in attendance [Cindy, Teri & Bob, Nancy, Michele & Monique], and hi to Leeann, Blair, Tom, Gwen, Kevin & Barbara. Thanks to Frankie & The Piledriver Pipers From County Hell for their opening performance. This was certainly a special night. Now, can you say: Home of the Brave!!! Set List: Road To Ruin - Downtown Baghdad Blues - The Reels FIRE OF FREEDOM: [Fordham Rd/8 a.m.] - Maria's Wedding - Rockin The Bronx - Fanatic Heart - Funky Ceili - Fire of Freedom - James Connolly - [Bainbridge Ave/2 a.m.] - Banks of the Hudson - 40 Shades of Blue - New York, NY 10009 - Sleep Tight in New York City - Black 47 - Livin' in America Encore: Biko
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S With one week to go until Black 47 plays the entire Fire of Freedom album, we were treated to exactly half of the 14 tracks in this night's set list. Additionally, for the third week in a row, the band added many more infrequently played terrific songs, including "Fatima," "Trouble in the Land," "Fallin' Off the Edge of America," "Bobby Fuller," and "Losin' It." I'll see everyone Saturday for the "Fire of Freedom" show; come up to the front of the audience and say "hello" if you can. I'm planning on videotaping the entire show. Set List: Road To Ruin... San Patricio... Trouble in the Land... Reels... Our Lady of the Bronx... Fanatic Heart... Rockin The Bronx... Livin in America... Fire of Freedom... Fatima... Jigs... Fallin Off the Edge of America... Black 47... Who Killed Bobby Fuller?... Losin It... 40 Shades of Blue... Funky Ceili Encore: Biko
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Ernie for Set List & Review] Another rousing show at Connolly's on a rainy Saturday night that didn't hold back the crowd, which was treated to a great show as the lads continue to fulfill the Black 47 Forum requests. Favorites like Trouble in the Land & Black 47 made the set list, and we were once again graced with the presence of Baby Monroe during Fire of Freedom and the finale, Like a Rolling Stone. Larry mentioned playing the full Fire of Freedom album next week, as Connolly's seems the place to be for Saturday nights. Set list: New York, New York 10009... Black Rose... Trouble in the Land... Reels... My Love is in NY... Blood Wedding... Rockin the Bronx... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom... Banks on the Hudson... Johnny Byrnes Jig... Black 47... Those Saints... James Connolly... Funky Ceili Encores: Maria's Wedding, Like a Rolling Stone
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S (OPENING NIGHT) As this is predominantly a "Set List" website, the inclusion of tonight's 2005 Connolly's Opening Night set list is an absolute pleasure. Breaking from a tradition of "formula set list with only a handful of surprises," tonight was one unexpected song after another. And responding to this "not so often played" material, the band was at it's peak. Another member of the 100+ club agreed with me afterwards that this may have been the best Black 47 show we've ever seen. I think there's a lot to be said for the energy the band puts in to a song when it is not a regular inclusion on the standard set list. And as these songs were coming one after another, the entire band was at peak energy levels all night. Even an "every show" song like "Rockin' The Bronx" and "Funky Ceili" had new life breathed into it. All the regulars were there for this Opening Night, and Connolly's was absolutely packed and ready to go. Baby Monroe joined the boys onstage for a number of songs, and sang the ending to Fire of Freedom, as well as a verse in Get Up, Stand Up. And for anyone who was around then, tonight also had the feeling of a Paddy Reilly's show, owing in part to 6 of tonight's songs being from "Home of the Brave." Too many highlights to mention, but "Our Lady of the Bronx," "Too Late To Turn Back," and "Losin' It" were very special tonight. It was also a very nice touch having "Orphans of the Storm" immediately follow "American Wake." Thank you Black 47. Set List: New York, New York 10009... Too Late To Turn Back... The Reels... Road To Ruin... Our Lady of the Bronx... Danny Boy... Rockin' The Bronx... 5 Points... I Got Laid on James Joyce's Grave... American Wake... Orphans of the Storm... Johnny Byrne's Jig... Downtown Baghdad Blues... Who Killed Bobby Fuller?... Losin' It... Funky Ceili Encores: Get Up, Stand Up... Like A Rolling Stone

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2005 @ SUFFOLK COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT EMERALD SOCIETY, BAYSHORE, LONG ISLAND [Thanks to Heather for Set List & Review] We headed out listening to Neil falling off the face of the earth, seeing the bluebird, and wondering if she's going to carry him home. The bar is at exit 53 and we had to pull over at exit 39 because the car was overheating. I was afraid it was going to explode, especially when I saw sludge spout out. A school bus went by with a sign bearing a #47 in the window: a sign. We got there at 1 p.m. only to find Chris Byrne had just started. In all these years of traveling to see Seanchai, they finally beat us to a show. "I know you're all interested in the big game, so we'll continue to update you throughout the set; Mets: 2 Rockies: 1." Joe Hurley was hoping West Ham beats the Yankees and said that the new album is due out in January. The Ruffians had everyone dancing, waltzing, and drinking. I swear the Mulvihill-Lynch stepdancers were airborne at one point. I haven't seen Black 47 in the longest and it was great to see them have an enthusiastic crowd. Special thanks to Leo for getting a stellar lineup together for the Suffolk County Fire Dept. Emerald Society. I think it's time to start another tradition: Quarterway to St. Patrick's Day and we can, as Seanchai says, Do It Again. Set List: Big Fellah... Green Suede Shoes... Reels... Three Little Birds... Desperate... Mychal... Downtown Baghdad Blues... Rockin The Bronx... Different Drummer... Those Saints... Jigs... 40 Shades of Blue... Funky Ceili (w/ Sean Griffin on bodhran) Encores: Gloria/I Fought The Law (w/ Joe Hurley)
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2005 @ NJ Shore Irish Festival, Sea Girt, NJ SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 @ IRISH HERITAGE FESTIVAL, MONTGOMERY, NY [Thanks to Ernie (EEFromJersey) for Review & Set Lists] Good to read those in attendance had a blast at the Ocean Mist in the midst of Ophelia. Fortunate for us, she kicked out eastward leaving Saturday & Sunday blarring with sunshine & good times. As we begin to lament the last days of summer, the Festival at Sea Girt was well attended on the banks of the Jersey Shore. The best thing about festivals is that all ages are in attendance and young, younger and us older folks danced to the sounds of B47. During "The Reels," a young man in his army fatigues danced to the tune, and later on, during "Johnny Byrne's Jig," we could witness a baby no more than 2-years-old standing on stage. Well that's what it's all about; generations being passed on to the next (may they represent us just as well). Sunday was very similar in Montgomery, N.Y. at a smaller, very well run festival. Black 47 did two sets with about an hour intermission and rocked the afternoon away before heading to Yonkers to do a benefit for the Katrina hurricane victims. We also were treated to not only the standards, but to "Mychal," "Bobby Sands," and "Those Saints" (for New Orleans) all having special meanings around this time. Hope to see some of you at Larry's solo show in Ringwood on Oct. 2nd. That's going to be special. If not, I'll see everyone this coming fall at Connolly's!
NJ Shore Irish Festival, Sea Girt, NJ Set List: Big Fellah... Green Suede Shoes... Livin' in America... Reels... Three Little Birds... Desparate... Mychal... Rockin the Bronx... Different Drummer... SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 @ RORY DOLAN'S, YONKERS, NY A spirited 7 pm start for this Hurricane Katrina Benefit Event at this great bar. The boys played two shows earlier this day in Montgomery, NY, but still managed to get to Rory's to help with the fundraising. Highlight was an absolutely spirited finale of Gloria & I Fought The Law, complete with borrowing some of the lyrics from Oh Maureen during Gloria, and P2 singing background with Joe during I Fought The Law. Knowing P2, he must have been thinking of the great cover The Clash did of I Fought The Law on their first record. Set List: Big Fellah... Green Suede Shoes... Livin' in America... the Reels... Downtown Baghdad Blues... Rockin' The Bronx... Different Drummer... Those Saints... Gloria... I Fought The Law
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2005 @ THE OCEAN MIST, MATUNUCK, RI [Thanks to Linda aka Gwen for the Set List] Set List: Green Suede Shoes... Livin' In America... Far Side of the Wall... The Reels... SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2005 @ THE CONEY ISLAND IRISH FAIR BROOKLYN, NY 9/11! 4 years to the day. We heard "Mychal" as a remembrance, and lots of the Fair-goers wore their shirts commemorating the day. The weather was perfect and there was good music and food all over the place. Greetings to Joe & Leeann, Blair, (hope you all liked the pictures), Shawn, Ernie and their beautiful daughter, and to Cindy, as she begins working on her next 10 shows. Prior to the Black 47 set, anyone in attendance needed to only walk 100 yards to see the band's co-founder, Chris Byrne, performing with his band, Seanchai & The Unity Squad. Fred, Andrew and Geoff, as did I, saw fit to do so. Unlike before, the band has very little, if any, pre-taped material, as they've added a drummer and bass guitar to the lineup. This is an absolutely remarkable band that still has strong ties to Black 47. Frankly, (and I hate to preach), one cannot fully understand the history of Black 47 without understanding the importance of Chris (Seanchai). And, you also get the bonus of hearing Rachel Fitzgerald sing; and if there is a better voice anywhere else, please let me know where to find it. Chris, who himself was receiving body bags on 9/11/01 (he is a retired detective who immediately volunteered for action on that day) sang "Gates of Hell" as his remembrance. For more info re: Seanchai & The Unity Squad, and their shows at the fabled Rocky Sullivan's, see the link at the bottom of this page; a link that I've had on the bottom of this page since the day I created it. Lastly, a reminder: Opening Night of Connolly's is 10/15. Larry promises to do a "Who Killed Bobby Fuller?/Losin It" medley that night. Set List: Big Fellah... Kathleen... The Reels... Three Little Birds... Desperate... Staten Island Baby... Rockin' The Bronx... 5 Points... Those Saints... Mychal... Girl Next Door... Downtown Baghdad Blues... Johnny Byrne's Jig... Funky Ceili Encore: Maria's Wedding
FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2005 @ TOAD'S PLACE, NEW HAVEN, CT [Thanks to Leeann for Set List & Review] Black 47 was back at Toad?s Place and the show had a major surprise. Although there was no Fred tonight, Christine Ohlman joined the band on stage as a special guest, and she was incredible. Her voice and stage presence were phenomenal as most of the crowd seemed to be in awe of her. She joined the band for "Black Rose," "Like A Rolling Stone," and of course, for "Blood Wedding," the song she sang with Black 47 on the "New York Town" record. Set List: Big Fellah.. Green Suede Shoes.. The Reels.. My Love Is In New York.. Downtown Baghdad Blues.. Blood Wedding (w/ Christine Ohlman).. Black Rose (w/ C.O).. Rockin' the Bronx? Different Drummer.. Fire of Freedom.. James Connolly.. Girl Next Door.. Funky Ceili Encore: Like a Rolling Stone (w/ C.O.)

SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2005 @ THE DRY DOCK, NEWBURGH, NY "I remember your eyes, from the 12th of July, when the sirens were screaming....." Being so close to Fanatic Heart Day, Black 47 included what would be the show?s highlight in the set, as they do every year. This wonderful performance of ?Fanatic Heart,? and a triple encore made the Grand Opening at the Dry Dock Bar a really nice evening. Other highlights included Cindy achieving ?Regular? status, as this was her 10th show. (How do you like that t-shirt I BOUGHT YOU?) Set List: Big Fellah Green Suede Shoes The Reels Three Little Birds Desperate Fanatic Heart Rockin The Bronx Different Drummer Fire of Freedom Downtown Baghdad Blues Jigs Jim Larkin 40 Shades of Blues Funky Ceili Encores: Maria's Wedding Gloria I Fought The Law

SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2005 @ PORT JEFFERSON IRISH FAIR Very nice 8 song set on an absolutely beautiful evening on the south shore of the island. SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S A somewhat late start for this, the last Connolly's show of the season, was well worth the wait. Larry arrived fresh from his 2 hour interview on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight, where he discussed various chapters from his book, as well as politics in general. The political discussion probably made its way to the set list as we had an abundance of political songs, ending with a performance of Biko as the second encore, which featured Geoff simultaneously playing both his instruments. Greetings to the military personnel in attendance who inspired tonight's performance of Downtown Baghdad Blues, which we learned from the radio interview was influenced by e-mails Larry received from Iraq. A huge shout out to the New England crew who made their way down by bus (don?t feel left out at all; I hate the Yankees too.) Greetings to Cindy, Leeann, Blair, Shawn, Ernie, Heather, and to the escapee dancer from the ?Woodstock? movie, as well as the three slam dancers. Also, greetings to the Wrens fan I met before the show and please note, "The Meadowlands" is the best record I've heard since "Home of the Brave" was released. To Cindy & Leeann: I only regret that I left my camera in the car. Personal musical highlight was an inspired performance of the great American Wake, and seeing Biko for the first time since August of 2003. And, thank you Black 47 for another great Connolly's season. Set List: Big Fellah Green Suede Shoes San Patricio Brigade The Reels Downtown Baghdad Blues American Wake Rockin The Bronx Different Drummer Fire of Freedom Jim Larkin James Connolly Johnny Byrne's Jig Kathleen Funky Ceili Encores: Staten Island Baby Biko
SUNDAY, APRIL 17, 2005 @ BRIDGET'S PUB, STATEN ISLAND [Thanks to Staten Island Tom for Set List & Review] Larry did selected readings from "Green Suede Shoes: An Irish-American Odyssey." Crowd was somewhat sparse, but very enthusiastic. Karlos Trapp opened for Larry. Set List: Life's Like That, Isn't It?... James Connolly... Uncle Jim... Blood Wedding... Bobby Sands MP... Livin in America... Funky Ceili Encore: Staten Island Baby (with Karlos Trapp)
SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S Crowd filled in nicely for the 2nd to last Connolly?s show of the season. Band sounded great as the sound system, after an early mishap, worked to perfection, especially on the vocals. No Geoff tonight, but we were treated to a guest fiddle player during quite a few songs. Very nice seeing Jim Larkin and James Connolly performed back-to-back, and Blood Wedding and Tramps Heartbreak were real treats. Hope Shawn found her car alright; congrats to Andrew on his new CD; to Blair and Leeann: the next 3 on the list are burning, broiling and feverish; to Cindy & Leeann: I?ll have a bottle of Jager and the film crew there next Saturday. Next week's show promises to be a wild one as the New England crowd is planning a trip to New York for the season's final Connolly's gig. Set List: Green Suede Shoes Livin In America The Reels Jim Larkin James Connolly Tramps Heartbreak Rockin The Bronx? THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2005 @ THE KNITTING FACTORY, NYC [ST. PATRICK?S DAY SHOWS] Clearly there?s a new generation of Black 47 fan on the horizon. As I entered the Knitting Factory for the second show, I saw lots of teenagers, as well as young children with parents leaving the first show. The second show was pure energy from start to finish. The club had superb acoustics and each band member could be easily heard. Speaking of kids, Geoff?s daughter was being interviewed before the second show, and evidently has a gig with her own band scheduled in June at the legendary CBGBs. Second show highlight was an impassioned performance of Bobby Sands MP, and a pair of killer encores. Two guest dancers took the stage for The Reels and later Johnny Byrne's Jig, and fresh from his guest spot with Seanchai & The Unity Squad, special guest Baby Monroe joined the boys for a few songs. I hope the blonde got home safely, and hi to Cindy on the occasion of her first Black 47 St. Patrick?s Day show. Hi too to Blair and Leeann.

This was Black 47's 5th show in 5 nights, concluding their midwest tour. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Heather & EEFromJersey for Reviews & Set List] FROM HEATHER: I got to Connolly's late because trains were running at slower speeds due to trackwork. When I got to Connolly's, the place was packed and I had to weave my way through the throng to get up front. I didn't mind the crowd because the cover was going to Concern for Tsunami Relief, and I was able to get to my spot just as Black 47 took the stage. After Q104.3 held the raffle, the Bhoys were joined onstage by special guest star Mary Courtney as she sang her part from Livin? in America as Larry did his verses from Part 2 of the song. About Larkin/Connolly, Larry said that the songs were about two union leaders, the first one being Jim Larkin, "the next one is your friend, James Connolly," and Joe was playing the bodhran with his bare hands. In the end $4,000 went to Concern for Tsunami Relief. Much love to Phyllis and Shawnea for handling the crowd, to Black 47 for playing the fundraiser, and to everyone who donated. FROM EEFROMJERSEY: Have to admit, it was somewhat strange as I walked in, you could sense that the regular crowd had been altered a bit. True to a sense, with the radio station, the donors of raffle prizes present, that would be the tone for the night. It was packed last night (packed like a New Year's or even a St. Patrick?s concert for the lads.) Needless to say, it was comforting to see some familiar faces there. The show started right on time. No Geoff (as he's touring in England with The Bureau). Some highlights: Mary Courtney joined the band for "Livin' in America," and part of the inspiration for Czechoslovakia was present; his name is Jim and this time Larry asked him up on the stage. Jim was rockin' through out the night. Always good to see the past blending in with the present & future. SET LIST: Green Suede Shoes? Big Fellah? Reels? Three Little Birds? Desperate? Far Side of the Wall? Bells of Hell? Rockin? the Bronx? Livin? in America (w/ Mary Courtney)? Fire of Freedom? Baghdad Blues? Czechoslovakia? Johnny Byrne?s Jig? Jim Larkin? James Connolly? Funky Ceili Encore: Like A Rolling Stone
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2005 @ CONNOLLY'S The Anti-Valentine?s Day show far exceeded expectations last night at Connolly?s. With a backdrop of the new CD and book available, the 18-song set list included most of the voted-for songs, all presented in pure high energy Black 47 fashion. It was a great crowd that was totally into the theme from the start, as the beer was literally flying. Luckily I videotaped most of the special set list inclusions, and was glad to immortalize the site of flowers coming out of Geoff?s sax and Joe?s underwear hanging from the mic stand. To Cindy, Leeann, Carrie & Blair: excellent job trying to perfect my new dance routine; remember, pinky fingers up and middle finger down. We?ll work on the ?reach for the floor? move at the next show. Hi to Phyllis, Shawn & Ernie, and thanks to Heather for the Celtic golf balls. Too many highlights to go into individually, but the Connolly?s sing-a-long at the end of ?American Wake? was very special. Leeann: good call on the ?Staten Island Baby? encore. Set List: My Love Is In New York? Black Rose? Banks of the Hudson? Fallin? Off The Edge of America? The Reels? Far Side of the Wall? Three Little Birds? Desperate? Rockin? The Bronx? Road To Ruin? FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to EEFromJersey for Set List & Review] Great night on Friday, especially nice meeting Bronx Jimmy, John Curtin, and the group from the Ireland '04 trip that were there. Katie O'Shady did a very good job dancing on stage during "Reels;? Brian from NJ - really good seeing you again bro, it has been awhile. Bronx Jim - thanks for bringing some of that California weather with you; it was truly a pleasant evening. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Livin In America? Reels? Three Little Birds? Desparate? SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to EEFromJersey for Review & Set List] Must have seen the band well over 50 times, probably closer to 100, and I'm sure just like many of you, never cease being amazed. But as I have said on many of occasion, last night was electrifying; no Andrew again, as he continues to heal from eye surgery & noticeably missing was Fred. With that said, the lads sparkled. Lots of playing around on stage, especially by Joe who was in rare form, and as the big ending to I Fought the Law was blaring out, the show came to an end with Geoff, mockingly beating Joe who was on his back with his saxophone. Special guest in the audience was Giants kicker Steve Christy. Larry had mentioned before the show that he had attended the Giants came earlier, a couple of people announced their engagements. During American Wake, Larry asked for couples to share in a special holiday moment as couples paired off, slow dancing all over the floor, during the improvisational break on 40 Shades, the band attempted 4 times to get Jingle Bells down. Fantastic show, great crowd -- New Year's Eve should be equal. Set List: Big Fellah? Green Suede Shoes? Reels? 3 Birds? Desparate? Far Side of the Wall? Rockin the Bronx? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? Baghdad Blues? Johnny Byrne's Jig? Bells of Hell? American Wake? 40 Shades? Funky Ceili Encores: Maria's Wedding? Like a Rolling Stone? Gloria? I Fought the Law
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S Lots of energy, excellent crowd, and the band was as tight as can be. Good Shepard?s Pie & Magner?s before the show was the perfect segway into one of those Black 47 shows where you wouldn?t change a thing even if you could. And, we officially have a new Anthem. ?Jim Larkin? is such a perfect Black 47 song that it will join the likes of James Connolly, The Big Fellah, Bobby Sands MP, and the unreleased Red Hugh O?Donnell as the latest concert Anthem. We had quite a mixed group of new dancers; Heather got a new T-shirt, Phyllis was in great form, and the girl from Valley Cottage was ?On Fire.? Only Set List changes saw Livin? In America and Those Saints substituted for Mychal and Maria?s Wedding. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? San Patricio Brigade? Far Side of the Wall? The Reels? Livin? In America? Jim Larkin? Rockin? The Bronx? Different Drummer? Those Saints? Johnny Byrne?s Jig? Baghdad Blues? Bells of Hell? 40 Shades of Blue? Funky Ceili Encores: James Connolly? I Got Laid on James Joyce?s Grave
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2004 @ THE BRIGHTON BAR, LONG BRANCH, NJ Set List: Big Fellah? Black Rose? Reels? 3 Little Birds? Desperate? Jim Larkin? Rockin the Bronx? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S First of all, for all those with late trains to catch, the boys kept their word and started at 10:30 E.S.T. (not Irish Time). Connolly?s completely filled up by 11 and it was a large, receptive, involved crowd, even though Larry taunted everyone during 40 Shades of Blue by saying ?they scream louder in Ohio and Iowa.? Geoff was not in attendance, and occasionally his saxophone parts were obviously missing, especially during ?James Connolly.? However, Joe took Geoff?s usual spot on the stage and filled in admirably by doubling up on some parts. The raffle to raise funds to send a metro area Dance Troop to Ireland went well, and we were treated to their dancing during ?The Reels,? ?Johnny Byrne?s Jig? and ?Different Drummer.? Welcome all those on hand from Chicago, Boston and Buffalo, and to Cindy, as well as Robert from Delaware. Black 47 returns 12/4 to Connolly?s for their ?15th Anniversary? show. We also got two completely new songs, and the resurfaced ?Into The West,? which was a standard back in Paddy Reilly?s in the early ?90s. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? San Patricio Brigade? Jim Larkin? The Reels? Into The West? Kathleen? Rockin? The Bronx? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? Bagdad Blues? Johnny Byrne?s Jig? James Connolly? Staten Island Baby... New York Town? 40 Shades of Blue? SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Nate for Set List & Review] Saturday night at Connolly?s was FIRST ANNUAL PIRATE NIGHT! SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Heather for Set List & Review] With Black 47's Connolly's homecoming to Connolly's comes the start of my 7th year of seeing The Bhoys. I didn't think it was possible, but Black 47 started at 10:30. Believe it. The crowd took a bit get going. Joe promises it gets better. I know Larry had said in his last newsletter that they were going to do some new songs and when they did "Far Side of the Wall," I was like, "New songs, yeah right. Look in Larry's brown eyes and trust him." This is what I get for being a wise-ass. Tuesday they head into the studio to get going on the album due out in February. Set List: My Love Is In NY? Black Rose? Far Side of the Wall? Reels? Into The West? Mychal? Rockin?? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? Bells of Hell? Jim Larkin? Uncle Jim? Jigs? 40 Shades of Blue? Elvis Murphy? James Connolly? Funky Ceili Encores: The Girl Next Door? Staten Island Baby
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2004 @ THE BEAR & GRILL, FAIRFIELD, CT [Thanks to Bill Murphy for Set List & Review] Great show as always, but not many there. Some Black 47 fans, but most had no clue about the band. Some new songs were played, and they are going into the studio on Tuesday to work on the new recording. Cover was only $12, but the Bear & Grill did not get the word out. The college kids at Fairfield U. love the band. Larry gave me the set list after the show. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Livin?? Bells of Hell? The Reels? Far Side of the Wall? Mychal? Rockin?? Different Drummer? Uncle Jim? James Connolly? Into West? Jigs? Jim Larkin... Five Points? Funky Ceili Encore: Like A Rolling Stone

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2004 @ IRISH FESTIVAL, PORT JEFFERSON, NY [Thanks to Leo for Review & Set List] Wow! Last night was another great outdoor show in Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York. Like last year, it was a two day festival inlcuding the McCabes, Cherish the Ladies, Eileen Ivers, Fathom, the Prodigals and, of course, Black 47. It was an outdoor show right on the harbor, with the ferries coming in an out and it was a warm summer night under the stars (as opposed to Wednesady, when some of the bands played in the rain). Lots of pipers and dancers as well. This was a reallly awesome show in a beautiful spot. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Livin in America? Reels? San Patricio Brigade? Mychal? Rockin the Bronx? Different Drummer? Those Saints? James Joyce? Five Points? Funky Ceili Encores: Gloria? I Fought The Law
THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Heather for Review & Set List] Black 47 did a free concert for ITV, a British TV station, for its documentary about Father Mychal Judge. As I was heading into Connolly's, I caught the tail end of the conversation from a guy who wasn't familiar with the band asking about Black 47. The Connolly's guy replied, "It's Celtic rock." "Celtic? You mean like Irish stuff?" There was a nice turnout at Connolly's, including a member of the clergy. And yes, they did "Mychal" twice. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Livin?? Reels? Mychal? San Patricio?Rockin'? Different? Fire? NY Town? Jigs? Mychal? Black Rose? 40 Shades of Blue? Funky Ceili Encores: SI Baby? Maria?s Wedding
FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 2004 @ FITZGERALD?S HARP & BARD, CLIFTON, NJ [Thanks to a Guest Reviewer for Review & Set List] A rainy night in sweet NJ. Anybody who knows what ?March 19 Philadelphia? or ?Englishtown ?78? or ?The Bottom Line ?75? means can definitely appreciate the show we got Friday. This was one of the best 47 shows I?ve seen. Larry took his glasses off 3 times for 3 of the longest Black 47 songs! It will be remembered by the place and date; ?Harp & Bard ?04?. It was different from other Harp & Bard shows mostly because the dance floor was empty and everybody was sitting. The lights were up high and bright and a few beamed right down on LK, Fred & Joe. That might have been a buzzkill for most bands, but not Black 47. It seems the more exposed and vulnerable they were, the more they exponentially fuse together with the music and jams. Awesome musicianship. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Livin in America(11 Years On)? Reels? San Patricio Brigade? Maggie Mae?s? Czechoslovakia? Fanatic Heart? Rockin? the Bronx? Those Saints? Blind Mary/Sleep Tight in NYC? Jigs? Kathleen? Funky Ceili Encores: I Got Laid on James Joyce?s Grave? Oh Maureen
SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to Heather for Review & Set List] Times Square was under lockdown tonight; the Olympic torch and all. I had no idea--the Olympic torch being sports-related and a big tourist thing, twp things I'm really not up on. It was like New Year's Eve, as I had to walk up 6th Ave instead, and tell a cop at the checkpoint I was going to Connolly's. I could hear the bhoys from the street and ringing for the elevator a million times in a row didn't make it come any faster. They were still on the 1st song when I got there. Set List: Banks of the Hudson, Black Rose, Blood Wedding, Kathleen, Reels, Tramps Heartbreak, Rockin, 5 Points, 40 Deuce, Brooklyn Goodbye, Jigs, 40 Shades of Blue, NY Town, Funky Ceili Encore: James Connolly
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 2004 (BORU VODKA PARTY) @ LOTUS (NYC) [Thanks to Heather for Set List] Set List: Green Suede Shoes, San Patricio, Reels, 3 Birds, Desperate, Rockin', Different Drummer, Those Saints, James Joyce, Funky Ceili
SATURDAY, JUNE 12, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S ?Perfect? is the word I used to tell Larry how great Saturday?s Return to Connolly?s show was. When one sees 20-plus shows a year, sometimes they become very similar, albeit thoroughly enjoyable. But there are always a few really special ones that are most memorable to me because of set list surprises. And not only were these special songs played, but they were played by the band in a completely tight, energetic fashion. To me it?s always about the music, and it was absolutely terrific to hear Blood Wedding, Vinegar Hill, Bobby Fuller, Losin? It, Gloria, I Fought The Law, etc all in one show. Set List: Kathleen? Black Rose? My Love Is In New York? Blood Wedding? Reels? Czechoslovakia? Fiona?s Song? Rockin? The Bronx? Five Points? Those Saints? Vinegar Hill? Jigs? New York Town? Bobby Fuller? Losin? It? Funky Ceili Encores: Gloria? I Fought The Law? Rolling Stone.
FRIDAY, 5/29/04 @ IRISH FESTIVAL, E. DURHAM, NY [Thanks to Heather for Reviews & Set Lists] It had to be 40 degrees Saturday night for the East Durham Irish Festival. But we knew once Black 47 started, things would warm up. "I want you to put your hands together and make some noise," Frankie Curran, the festival's MC said. "I want you to make this tent rock. They're your friends; you're their fans. Make some noise for Black 47!" Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Livin in America? Reels? 3 Birds? Desperate? Mychal? Rockin The Bronx? Different Drummer? Fire? Jigs? James Connolly? Funky Ceili? Encore: Rolling Stone
FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2004 @ BLACKTHORN, E. DURHAM, NY Special birthday greetings went out to Robin from her husband, Christian, who'd just returned from Iraq. One frantic mother tried to flag down all of Black 47 after the show so her kids can get their CD signed. They'd seen Black 47 twice and this was their favorite band. Once she got all members' autographs, she asked her kids, "Can Mommy stop stalking the band now?" I suggested "Who Killed Bobby Fuller?" for the second set, but Larry said he has to remember how it goes and run through it again. Immediately after was another set, at the hotel's bar. Larry rocked a broken guitar string while P2 drove the mile back to the festival grounds to retrieve the other guitar. Set List: Big Fellah? My Love Is In NY? Reels? 3 Birds? Desperate? S.I. Baby? Rockin? Different Drummer? Fire?. Fanatic Heart? Five Points? Those Saints? Jigs? 40 Shades of Blue? Funky Ceili (with Shilelagh Law)
Seanchai & Eileen Ivers [More Concert Notes]: "On Memorial Day we remember sacrifice," Chris said (on 5/30), welcoming Terry from the Bronx back from Iraq. "This song is about a different type of sacrifice." Seanchai started with "Gates Of Hell" and "I Am A Patriot." They had more of the hip-hop songs at the beginning of their set. At "Fields Of Athenrye," Chris promised, "This is the last time you'll hear this song this hour." It worked; a woman buying a CD after the show remarked that her kids love hip-hop and Seanchai is something for the whole family. Later that evening I caught Eileen Iver's set (as did Chris and Rachel). This woman is out of control. By the end of her set she had the whole crowd on their feet dancing. A welcome shot in the arm when you have bands who just cover all the old standards. I've had enough of Whiskey In The Jar and Dirty Old Town to last me until next Memorial Weekend.
THURSDAY, MAY 28, 2004 @ BLACKTHORN, E. DURHAM, NY [Thanks to Heather for Set List & Review] If Memorial Day is the official start of summer, then seeing Black 47 at the Blackthorn is the official start of Memorial Day weekend. It was a lively, energetic show that left you (or, at least, me) eager for their 2 other gigs the next day. Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Livin? in American? Reels? Three Little Birds? Desperate? San Patricio? Black 47? Rockin?? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? American Wake? Orphan of the Storm? Jigs? Kathleen? Funky Ceili Encore: Maria?s Wedding

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 2004 @ BB KING'S, NYC Just got back from a great St. Patrick?s Day Show with my 12-year-old. The boys started at 7:05 and played nearly 2 hours. BB King?s was a really nice venue; plenty of room on the dance floor for the packed crowd up front, as well as tables with great visibility in the back and on the sides of the room. Outside the New York City lights on 42nd and Broadway looked particularly nice tonight. It was nice meeting Nate and Leo tonight. Also, thanks to Phyllis for the ticket help, Heather for the photos, and a special notice is given to Chris and Danny Morris, along with Lilli, on the occasion of their first Black 47 show. And I hope Coach Tom enjoyed Czechoslovakia. Set List: (1st Show): Big Fellah... Black Rose... The Reels... San Patricio... Bobby Kennedy... Rockin' The Bronx... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom... Mychal... James Connolly... New York Town... Czechoslovakia... 40 Shades of Blue... Funky Ceili Encores: Staten Island Baby... Maria's Wedding
FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 2004 @ THE CALL, PROVIDENCE, RI [Thanks to Mic & Kat for Set List & Review] First time at The Call and another rockin? performance by the boys. It was a "non-Fred" show, but Mr. Blythe made up for it. And again, the venue was perfect, two levels, good crowd and great Guinness. SET LIST: Big Fellah? Green Suede Shoes? San Patricio? Reels? Bobby Kennedy? Blood Wedding? Rockin? the Bronx? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? Mychal? Black 47? Jigs? NY Town? Funky Ceili Encores: Gloria? I Fought The Law
THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2004 @ HMV MUSIC 5TH AVE/45 ST NYC [Thanks to Heather for Set List & Review] I had to step over a body to go downstairs to the subway. I think: ?That can?t be good.? At HMV, Hammy greets me and asks how I am: ?Playing hooky from work?" "Good, we like to encourage that.? After San Patricio, Larry remarks that he got thru the song without any help from Guinness. I look at the stage: 2 bottles of Gatorade, 1 cup of coffee, and 1 sippy cup for Fred?s daughter. Larry, introducing Fiona?s Song, mentions that it?s one of the many duets on the album. At the end of Kathleen, Joe announces he?s going to get some hotdogs and I head back to work, of course heading down a block toward Madison when I thought I was heading uptown to 46th and 47th to catch the train. I think that was the earliest time of day I?ve ever seen Black 47 perform. It was strange. SET LIST: San Patricio Black Rose Fiona's Song Orphans Kathleen
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2004 @ JB O'REILLY CLUB, SPRINGFIELD, MASS [Thanks to Mic & Kat for Set List & Review] It was nice to see Black 47 in such a small venue with plenty of elbow room. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2004 @ STONE PONY, ASBURY PARK, NJ [Thanks to a Guest Reviewer for Set List] No Andrew (again) on the bass; some guy Shamus (James perhaps) played bass. Geoff Blythe lit the Stone Pony on fire! He assaulted us the entire night with his horns! The rest of the boys had to adjust to keep up with him, which made them and us laugh in wonder. Eat your heart out Clarence Clemmens!! Set List: Big Fellah? Green Suede Shoes? Orphans of the Storm? Reels? San Patrico Brigade? Mychal? Rockin? the Bronx? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S [Thanks to NATE for Set List, and Heather for Review] It was 12:30 when Larry yelled, ?TVs off! Sorry we?re late! New York fuckin traffic!? What an incredible nite. Like New Year?s Eve and Saturday nites at the Blackthorne. They were going on pure adrenaline. And not sloppy-tired I gotta get through this so I can get some sleep. The appearance on Vin?s show was preheating the oven. At San Patricio Larry apologized for being late, saying they were on WFUV. ?C?mon!? Larry yells toward the end of Rockin The Bronx. ?You don?t have to get up early tomorrow, and I know you?re not that religious. Everyone?s staying out late tonite! Everyone?s getting laid tonite!? Toward the end of the Jigs, a big guy in a Stone Cold Steve Austin shirt pushed his way up front and puts down his drink. I think: Uh oh. This guy bursts out in a stepdance the force of which has never been seen before and probably will never be seen again. I swear he was airborne at times. You know how when you dub one tape onto another and it sounds sped-up like the Chipmunks singing? That?s how fast this guy was dancing. An older guy joins him and Larry says to buy them a shot after. I got in at 20 to 4, turned off the ringer on my phone, and lowered the volume on my answering machine. SET LIST: Green Suede Shoes? Livin' In America? The Reels.. Three Little Birds? Desperate ? San Patricio Brigade? Rockin' The Bronx? Different Drummer? Fire Of Freedom ? Mychal? Johnny Byrne's Jig? Kathleen? Funky Ceili Encores: 40 Shades Of Blue? Staten Island Baby
SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S Fresh from seeing the great Fab Faux do a Beatles set in Easton, PA I managed to catch the second half of the Connolly's show. Afterwards I was lucky enough to pick up Black 47's newest masterpiece, "New York Town." Set List: Green Suede Shoes? Road To Ruin? Brooklyn Goodbye? Reels? Black 47? Rockin?? Different Drummer? Fire of Freedom? Orphans of the Storm? Jigs? New York Town? Fiona's Song... James Connolly? 40 Shades? Funky Ceili Encores: Staten Island Baby? Like A Rolling Stone
FRIDAY, JAN 30, 2004 @ APPALACIAN BREWING CO, HARRISBURG PA [Thanks to Lisa for Set List & Review of her first Black 47 concert] Oh my where to start? Well, we got there very early, as soon as the doors opened....so we had to walk past the band warming up to get to the bar. As I walked past the stage, Larry turned and was looking right at us all...and I flashed him a smile..and he smiled back! A very important thing about this concert...everyone was so incredibly friendly. The fans talked to me all the time....even in the bathroom. A really great crowd. The band that opened was very good....and the lead singer was totally in love with Black 47. He was wearing their shirt, and was dancing throughout the concert. There was a pretty good crowd at this point, which kinda surprised me a bit, because after all, it was Harrisburg. However, I was soon to learn that they came from New York, Philly, etc....not just wee little Lancaster like me. So, the band takes the stage.....and I just explode! They did Big Fellah....and with each song, the bar crowd got more and more into it.... I have to say, the most emotional moment for me came when they sang James Connolly...and every fist went into the air.....and the drums sounded like gun shots.....and everyone just held their fists....and you could hear everyone just stand there....quietly inside this bar room, giving James his much deserved salute in a moment of solidarity. Everytime a song was over, I would think...well that was a great concert...and they would launch into another one that I loved. So anyway, the end finally had to come.....and I, like everyone else, made my way to the table......I quickly stole a set list from the floor of the stage, walked up to buy my cd and t-shirt, ran over to Larry, handed him the paper, and he signed it. SET LIST: Big Fellah... Green Suede Shoes... San Patricio... Reels... Fiona's Song... Rockin' .... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom... Orphans of the Storm... Jigs... James Connolly... Livin' in America... 40 Shades... Funky Ceili Encore: New York Town... Like A Rolling Stone
SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 2004 @ CONNOLLY'S Big treat after show as the new record, "New York Town," was played over the loudspeakers. Special note was made of Larry's duet with Roseanne Cash on "Fiona's Song." The record is superb. Set List: My Love Is In New York... Black Rose... Reels... Orphans of the Storm... Fiona's Song... Rockin' The Bronx... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom... Brooklyn Goodbye... Jigs... New York Town... James Connolly... Five Points... Funky Ceili Encores: James Joyce... Like A Rolling Stone
