Connolly's (1997 - 2003)

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2003 @ CONNOLLY'S
[Thanks to Bryan for Set List & Review]
A great time was had by all, hope the new year finds you well. Larry says Red Hugh O'Donnell won't be on this album, but on the next one, so I guess we can start pestering him about that now. New Album will go on sale @ Connolly's on Feb. 7th, so you can guess where I'll be that night. Did you know that Mulvanerty was poised to join Shilelagh Law just as they were forming? Dennis (fiddler from SL) mentioned this & Joe corroborated it. Weird, huh?

A welcoming committee of sorts in effect for 47's return. Saw lots of familiar faces and new ones. After a request for everyone to take a step closer, and a step to the left politically, things started heating up. Sorry I missed Ireland; heard I missed a wild one. Well, as they say, pix are worth 1,000 words, and from what I gather, perhaps $1,000.

Terrific show Saturday night. It's wonderful to see the band bringing back some rarely played songs like "Black 47" from FOF and "Change" from GSS. And special thanks for doing the great "Vinegar Hill."

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2003 @ BB KING'S BLUES CLUB, NY
[Thanks to Heather for Set List & Review]
BB King's is one the nicest venues I've been in in a long time, but that's because it's a gigantic tourist pit. 7 nations came off as Dave Matthews band type stuff with bagpipes. The Young Dubliners was equally as bland, with the lead singer's leather pants laughable. Does Black 47 ever put on a bad show? The yuppie/preppy crowd cleared out after 7 nations and young dubs, which was good because 2 drunk middle-aged chicks were throwing themselves at the young dubs and it was gross. The jams during rockin were sounding jazzier. Black 47 is back to Connolly's the end of october.
Set List: Big Fellah? Orphans? Mychal? Rockin?? Different Drummer? Fire? 40 Duece? Jigs? NY Town? 40 Shades? Funky Encores: Gloria? I Fought The Law

FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 2003 @ DELANEY'S IRISH ALE & STEAK HOUSE, GREENVILLE, NY
[Thanks to Bryan for Review & Set List]
Delaney's is about 20 minutes west of Middletown. Tickets were $30 advance ($35 at the door) and included a buffet-style dinner, a (bag) piper group, and an opening performance by the Shallows (www.shallowsband.com). Black 47 sounded great, seemed very loose, very relaxed, especially on Johnny Byrne's Jig, which seemed more "jazzy" than usual. The place wasn't air-conditioned, but at least it was a dry heat but that didn't keep both young & old enjoying themselves, with kids of all ages dancing to the instrumental numbers. See everyone @ The Blackthorne!

May 23-25, 2003 @ The Blackthorne Resort
[Thanks to Heather for Reviews & Set Lists]

If you love irish music, if your idea of a vacation is three Black 47 gigs in 48 hours (2 Seanchai gigs 11 hours apart), spend Memorial Weekend at the Blackthorne Hotel. First on the lineup was the Black 47 gig at the hotel's bar Friday nite. The gig was attended mostly by young Townies.
Set List: Green Suede Shoes... Livin' in America... The Reels... Three Little Birds... Desperate... Orphans of the Storm... Bobby Sands... Rockin the Bronx... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom... Mychal... Johnny Byrne's Jigs... San Patricio... Funky Ceili Encore: Staten Island Baby

Saturday at 7 pm on the main stage was Black 47. They're setting up and everyone's sitting down; I'm hanging back, wanting to rock out yet not wanting to be the only one up front, knowing Larry will call everyone out of their seats anyway. 47 comes on and everyone runs for the stage. They do their rock-out crowd pleaser set, pretty much the same as the bar the nite before. The set lists were out of reach on the stage. It was a rousing set, with energy from band and crowd in equal proportions. After the set the whole crowd leaves.
Set List: Big Fellah... Green Suede Shoes... The Reels... Three Little Birds... Desperate... Mychal... Rockin the Bronx... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom... Johnny Byrne's Jigs... Kathleen... James Connolly Encore: Maria's Wedding

The bar is packed for Black 47. What can i say about the 3rd gig in 48 hrs from a band I've seen more than 100 times. This is why I keep coming back. The energy, the dedication, the passion, the crowds, the smoke, the fact that they can make it like the first time that week I'd heard them.
Set List: Road To Ruin... Czechoslovakia... Three Little Birds... Desperate... The Reels... American Wake... Rockin' The Bronx... Different Drummer... Fire of Freedom... Johnny Byrne's Jig... Kathleen... 40 Shades of Blue... Funky Ceili Encore: Like A Rolling Stone

Going home, on the drive down Queens Blvd, we pass a bar called Maggie Mae's!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2003 @ CONNOLLY'S

THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2003 @ THE TEMPLE BAR, STAMFORD, CT
An excellent crowd and great friends led to another wonderful Black 47 evening in Stamford, CT, 10 months after their outdoor appearance last June. A little baseball talk before the show with dinner at Bobby Valentine`s Sports Gallery, followed by Jon, Steve, Coach Tom, and Bruce joining me at the Temple Bar for what also was Amstel Light Night. Thanks to Larry for all the personalized touches, especially the encore. Hightlights included Fire of Freedom, Our Lady of the Bronx and Brooklyn Goodbye, and most of all, a spirited Maria?s Wedding encore. Glad Jon got to be there for his first ?Maria;? Tom: 7 more and you attain ?regular? status; Steve: perfect plans and timing; and Bruce: judging by the jigs and reels you were doing all night, I think you?ll be back. Last but certainly not least: Angels 6 Yankees 2.

CARLITA RETURNS!
I wouldn't have believed it if i didn't see it for myself --no one smoked! Geoff did vanish for a while during Jigs and Andrew was gone during the encore announcement (which used to be the light-up point), but the only smoking was musically. To the guy yelling Funky Ceili, Larry said, we'll play that in about an hour...be patient...have a smoke." Joe suggested, have sex, then a smoke."

SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2003 @ THE STONE PONEY, NJ
[Thanks to Bryan for Set List & Review]
Overall, a very good show, 3 bands opened up so Black 47 didn't go on until sometime after midnight. Crowd was good, especially the Kiss me I'm drunk girl, and except for some guy with a whistle whom I could've done without. A great time was had by all......Larry said that the band was going to be recording the new album Monday, so we've got that to look forward to in the not so distant future.

MONDAY, MARCH 17,2003: ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!
TWO SHOWS @ KNITTING FACTORY & T.V. APPEARANCE

WPIX-TV (Channel 11): San Patricio Brigade... Funky Ceili
St. Patrick s Day morning. 8:50 a.m. Local station Channel 11 has Black 47 as its guest. They were introduced by the news anchor and proceeded to play San Patricio Brigade. However, annoyance followed as the song was cut for a commercial break prior to the final verse. After the commercial and a weather break, the boys then played Funky Ceili. Then, during the bad luck to your dad line, Larry proceeded to give the double middle finger sign right into the camera. A memorable t.v. show indeed.

Johnny Byrne's Jig... Where Have All The Flowers Gone... Staten Island Baby... Funky Ceili Encore: 40 Shades of Blue

[Thanks to Michele for First Show Review]
It was 7 o'clock and time to rock...and the crowd came ready to party, in true "Black 47/St. Patrick's Day Form!" Everyone was hooked from the moment the guys came out on the stage, and they did not disappoint! They played a great mix of old and new material, kept everyone moving, and actively engaged the audience; including Geoff's cigarette catching antics with a woman as they played "40 Shades of Blue" as their encore. Larry also took some time out to recognize the uncertainty of the times, and also paid tribute to Father Mychal Judge. He later spoke to everyone, paying special attention to the young people in the audience, as he dedicated Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" to them, as well as the young military personnel serving overseas. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 2003 @ WATER STREET BAR, BROOKLYN
[Thanks to Heather for Review & Set List]
The venue was nice; the show was in the basement of the Water Street Bar. I can imagine art installations going on there, but there were three columns in the
middle of the floor and one onstage and you couldn't see Andrew. There was
an opening act who were okay; they did a few covers of Saw Doctors songs in their set and were more of a sit-down thing. And these columns had huge bases and if there's going to be seats in a venue, people are going to sit. The crowd
was really unresponsive except for one drunk heckler.

SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2003 @ THE DOWNTOWN, FARMINGDALE
[Thanks to Heather for Set List & Review]
The gig last nite was 18+ and that had The Downtown packed. The Ruffians warmed up the stage and got an enthusiastic response. They've been invited back on 3/21 for the Prodigals' gig. Black 47 was joined onstage by the most,
uhm ..dancers I've seen at once and no body or amp was safe. Nobody in the audience was safe from the guy calling for James Connolly; a nice prelude for the gigs to come up next week.

SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 2003 @ CONNOLLY'S
[Thanks to Michele, "Our Lady of the Bronx," for Guest Review]
As usual, another fantastic set. The guys were fresh off of their gig from Troy Pub and Brewery last night, which included 3 encores, yet they delivered for their audience in typical, high energy, Black 47 style. Set included a new song, "Brooklyn Goodbye," and the return of "Fatima". Although the audience required some encouragement to move closer to the stage, things quickly progressed from there...including two enthusiastic performances by a "Riverdance" hopeful, an Irish step-dancing duet performed by Baby Monroe and a rather talented audience member, and the energetic dancing of two female audience members throughout the show, who were rewarded with "Black 47" t-shirts! We'll miss the guys at Connolly's on Saturday nights as they head off for 14 shows, some local-some not so local-before returning to Connolly s on 4/5.....enjoy and hurry back!

GUEST REVIEW: NOTES FROM REGO PARK
(Prior to Those Saints)....Hammy starts to play Black Rose, the boys turn around to look at him....he's aware something's up....starts Black Rose again....looks at set list and laughs: "Be patient, our drummer needs his glasses," says Larry >>> (Prior to Funky Ceili) Somebody yells "Bridie's coming," Larry said: "It takes a while. Irish guys are really good at foreplay... and horn players. Hammy's good at
fiveplay ....he's a drummer and could go all nite....the rest of us are sprinters.... uillean pipes are like you're playing with yourself.... Larry then goes to cue up drum machine, first Maria comes out....he tries again...James Connolly >>> There was a nice crowd of new faces and it took a bit to get everybody into the show. People hung back politely and Larry had to ask them to come forward twice. At the start of Funky Ceili a tall guy in a "Motorhead" shirt, with hair past his shoulders, comes up front and starts headbanging. I mean head-thrashin', hair-whippin', death metal head banging. Then he breaks into a jig, stumbles, and takes out the front row>>> This is my first review for you listmaniacs. I hope you like it. There was just a lot of funny onstage banter that lent flavor to the gig. I welcome your gentle criticism.

The boys were in perfect form last night as the 3rd floor at Connolly s was shaking for the entire 2 hour set. Great crowd, led by Ali, Greg & John Coffey, holding court in the middle of the dance floor; a real Black 47 family meeting. To Ali, Greg, and later Dominick, welcome to the Black 47 family. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2002 @ CONNOLLY'S
As usual, super show last night with lots of energy and loud, active audience. Another new song, "Fiona's Song," was introduced. It's already one of my favorites of the 6 or so new songs, and although it clearly has the distinctive Black 47 feel, the A minor to E minor changes with a moderate pace and heavy feel reminded me a bit of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Excellent. Also, what a great surprise getting "New York, NY 10009" as the opener.

Well over 2 hour set...very high energy and great crowd. Everyone dancing from the start. Baby Monroe, fresh from his guest appearance at the Seanchai release party last Monday, showed up for the final encore and did a duet w/ Larry during "Biko." The mayor of Wexford also made a guest appearance, which was probably the reason we were all treated to "Vinegar Hill."

SATURDAY, JULY 27, 2002 @ SHEA STADIUM
Happy 50th Birthday Jon. The Black 47 50th Birthday Trilogy is now complete; Kellys > Connolly's > Shea. Irish Day at Shea. Mets lose in extra innings. Absolutely beautiful day and a thrill to see the Black 47 Logo displayed throughout the game and post-game concert on the big scoreboard in centerfield. After suffering through an opening act, the boys took the stage at second base (a la Beatles) and did an abbreviated seven song set. Strange being so far away. They were accompanied by a superb group of champion dancers in the infield.

THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 2002 @ STAMFORD, CT
Ominous forecast and rain as I drove to Stamford for the show with my 10-year-old and her friend. We met some friends there, including the Coffey family, who s 10-year-old bats cleanup on my softball team. The park was a small triangular shaped area surrounded by restaurants on 3 sides. The street was closed to traffic and the entire setup was very audience-friendly. The boys gave a great performance, which started a bit past 6:30 pm. The rain stayed away until some drizzles hit the audience toward the end, but no one minded, especially the kids up front dancing the night away. Highlights included a terrific Fanatic Heart, Maria s Wedding and Those Saints.

FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2002 @ RORY DOLAN'S/YONKERS
The show was a late, and somewhat slow start. Seems like the Holiday kept the crowd somewhat smaller than the last Rory Dolan's appearance. Usually Larry calls the crowd right up to the front of the stage, but not Friday. So it took about 4 or 5 songs before things seemed to really get going. But certainly by the time the boys played The Reels, things were in full swing. Red Hugh O'Donnell gets better and better with each listening, and American Wake seemed like a perfect choice to be played at the time it was. Lastly, in answer to the crowd's request, the boys concluded with a spirited "James Connolly" encore. Thanks again to Heather for the pix and greetings to Brian, Coach Tom, and Irishgirl.

SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2002 (ST. PATRICK'S DAY) @ KNITTING FACTORY
Hundreds of people, including many kids (my own 10-year-old included) packed the Knitting Factory for the Annual Rite of Passage on St. Patrick's Day." Two people held up a big sign which read: "St. Patrick's Day = Black 47" Very true! Three cameras were used for filming. Two hand held cameras on each side of the stage, and one camerman sat just below the balcony. The DVD should be incredible. So many of the songs one doesn't often hear will be included, as well as all the anthems done to perfection. On a personal note, I had a slip prepared to give Larry so he could mention my 10-year-old just before the first encore. However, that wasn't needed. Surprise Surprise! During "Funky Ceili," Geoff Blythe reached down and lifted my Kaitlin on stage to stand and dance next to him and Larry during the song. A real thrill for me and her, particularly because she knows, as Geoff told her during the song, that she "will now be in the movie." Thanks to Heather, who was decked out in Shamrock sunglasses, for supplying the set list and notes for the second show. Greetings also to Dave Laurance, and Gail, who still see Black 47 every St. Patrick's Day. Two notes: During the first show, Larry mentioned Father Mychal Judge, who died at the WTC. He then added that Father Judge use to see the band at Connolly's and "this was his favorite song." The boys then played "Danny Boy." Prior to the encore in the second show, Larry asked for "10 seconds of silence." They then proceeded to play "Sleep Tight In New York City."

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2002 @ CONNOLLY'S
Exciting show from start to finish. The 17-song set lasted well over 2 hours. Anyone who hasn't seen them do the two new songs yet should really go as soon as possible. "Far Side of the Wall" and "Red Hugh O'Donnell" are terrific new additions to the Black 47 song vault. Two dancers joined the boys onstage during "The Reels." Surprise of the night for me was "Sam Hall" as first encore, and it was a real treat to get both "Banks of the Hudson" and "Vinegar Hill" the same night. Malcolm: Welcome to the Black 47 Family. Heather: Thanks for the copy of Thursday's Seanchai setlist.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, 2002 @ CONNOLLY'S
Last night was quite a special evening. A beautiful, surprisingly warm day in New York City allowed one to really enjoy the evening. It was a packed house at Connolly's with at least 250 in the audience. The band rehearsed - yes, rehearsed - earlier in the day. After all, why not? Two new songs were going to be introduced, plus they were going to add the great "Vinegar Hill" to the set list. Probably because they rehearsed, the boys came out of the gate on fire, to quote a record title. Of course, what will make this show memorable was the introduction of two new songs. The first, "The Far Side Of The Wall," fits right in to Black 47 song vault. The lyrics were in a recent Newsletter, and the song is fairly mellow with some interesting changes. It's a very good listen. The second new song, "Red Hugh O'Donnell (Fire and Lightening) seems destined to join other Black 47 songs which have become anthems. Haunting solo pipes from Joe begins and ends the song. In-between is a long, passionate song that has all the members playing at top form, especially Hammy who drove the number through its many timing changes. This is truly a song for all the hear. Last, as it was my birthday, and a friend helped Larry answer a request of mine I've been hounding him with for many months now, he nicely stepped to the mic, wished me happy birthday, and played the great "Vinegar Hill." My hope is that this becomes a regular addition to the rotation of songs.

The t.v. sets were turned off as the Jets lost to the Raiders just prior to the boys going on stage. Larry mentioned the Jets a few times, and also made mention of the group in attendance from Yale, as well as the Ryan family, who used their hard-earned airline passes to fly in from Chicago for the sole purpose of seeing Black 47; reason enough for me to root for the Bears the rest of the way. The show was the usual high quality, energetic 2+ hour set, with "Banks Of The Hudson" serving as a really nice opener. As usual, plenty of highlights, but for me it was a colossal rendition of "Blind Mary/Sleep Tight in New York City." After Joe played the tin whistle during the opening, he and Fred both played tin whistles throughout the song, and each time they reached a chorus the build-up was monumental.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2001 @ CONNOLLY'S
A lot of highlights in Saturday's show, not the least of which was the festivities up front by the stage as a group of first timers were celebrating Katie Kennedy's birthday. Black 47 gave us a tight, energetic 18 song performance. Opening the set with Black Rose and Banks Of the Hudson gave the show a different feel altogether, and was a precursor to some of the surprise setlist additions. These included Bobby Kennedy, Bobby Sands MP, Too Late To Turn Back, and maybe the evening's highlight, a perfectly timed performance of Fanatic Heart. My friend Steve likened the audience to a "Riverdance" tryout; an apt analogy as the dancing was non-stop. The audience showed their appreciation midway through the show as they brought drinks on stage for all the boys, including a direct pouring into Joe's mouth in-between breaks on the Pipes. Last, but not least, only one encore at Connolly's? It makes sense when it's a nearly 10 minute performance of Maria's Wedding.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2001 @ CONNOLLY'S
Last night my friend and I saw our 5th & 6th shows respectively in the past 5 months. It's really something how they all seem different, special and memorable. I probably remember them individually by the songs they do that one does not usually expect to hear. Last night we got three specials: Danny Boy, My Love Is In New York and American Wake. At the very beginning, Larry didn't seem to be thrilled by the audience's involvement; it's clear that the band plays best when the audience is right up against the stage. He signaled everyone to move up 10 feet or so to fill in the area and this seemed to move the show to a higher level. Simply said, it was as nearly a perfect Black 47 evening as one could have. Larry: thanks for the picture for Rachael. Arian: you should try to go to Mulcahy's.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2001 @ KELLY'S, WHITE PLAINS, NY
Benefit show for family of victims of 9/11. Very well attended. Food and drink supplied by local restaurants and Kelly's. Nice bar; it's very long, but somewhat narrow. Unfortunately the stage faces the narrow side, which makes for poor acoustics; sound bouncing all over the place. Nonetheless, the boys were great and played an excellent, spirited set, especially considering it was their fourth show in as many nights. Happy birthday Steve!

Terrific show held at beautiful Belmont Park. After bringing the audience upfront after Big Fellah & Green Suede Shoes, the show became a non-stop rock and dancefest. I thought the band did a remarkable James Connolly, complete with flag being marched onstage. Dancers also joined in onstage during The Reels and Johnny Byrne's Jig. My friend brought his daughter backstage to meet Larry just before the show, and she had an extra special memory because of it.
